Motherhood
Vera Sharma had wanted a child since the moment she had ceased to be one herself. The desire had grown within her like an opulent flower through turbulent years. She was the daughter of a Grey seamstress who had as little of an idea who Vera's father might be as she did herself, and she was well adept at escaping the lashes of whispers that would follow her through Center Heart. Her mother was not as deft as her daughter and grew bitter, blaming the unwanted seed that had grown within her before her sixteenth year for her hardships. Motherhood had been forced upon the woman, only weeks before her ranking day by a faceless man who stunk of gasoline. Vera was the innocent repercussion of the attack, and every day she ached for those who would see past her illegitimate status, and she found her release in Ari Fenn. He was determined to make the best of his life after spending his childhood in the Empireâs childrenâs homes, and he sought Vera for the same reason she did him. They both craved the empathy and acceptance that only they could offer one another.
They married rather young, but that was not something that was not considered abnormal in the Heart, and they soon settled down. Ari got a job at a smelting facility and returned back home each day with ash caked to his face and the smell of smoke entwined with his hair. Vera repaired small tears and split seams on any kind of fabric for a single copper piece per garment. Things were looking up for her, and she was happy with their shared little life. She was with child before the year was up. The two worked hard to save as much money as they could, resorting to own only the bare necessities in their one room apartment. Vera took scrap pieces of fabric she trimmed from her clients' garments and fashioned them into patchwork baby clothes. Ari constructed a crib piece by meager piece out of discarded wood he was able to procure from dumpsters. After sanding away the rough edges and sealing away the stained surfaces with a rather expensive can of brown paint, the minuscule bed became a single pillar of beauty in the otherwise dismal, decaying room.
Ari watched Vera grow over the next months with a gleeful fascination, and with each new day, Vera admired the pale stretch marks on her skin, feverishly awaiting the day she would hold her creation in her arms. She lay next to Ari after every day of bitter work the two endured, and they instantly would slip under the protection of sleep. Vera tried her best to keep up with the heaps of fabric piling up on her kitchen table as she approached the last few weeks of her pregnancy, but her body was not able to keep up with the endless demands of her will. Ari came home from the facility one day to find her asleep, her head nestled in her arms, a threaded needle still in her hand.
